When I first started this book I wasn’t a fan. I was reading it for one of my book clubs so I continued on, because all the other books we’ve read have been great. Feyre was weak to me. Not a weak character, like she wasn’t well written, but just a weak fictional person. She did all the fighting for her family and then she let them walk all over her. She hunted for food because she didn’t want them to die of hunger. She becomes their provider, which is admirable, especially since she’s the youngest, but she just takes their shit. Her father just gave up and didn’t even try to help out, I mean I know he has a bum leg but c’mon, and her sisters didn’t help either. Her one sister, Elain, has her head in the clouds while the other, Nesta, bitches about everything. I get why she’s angry but she doesn’t have to take it out on Feyre who is the only one providing for their family. They were all annoying me; the family, for the reasons I stated, and Feyre because she refused to stand up for herself. These people could at least show some gratefulness, but they just act like this is her job. It infuriated me.
All of that changes when she kills a fairie and has to payback his life by spending the rest of her life in the fairie lands, Prythian. Of course now is the time she finds her voice🤦🏽♀️. Not with her ungrateful family but with fairies who could snap her neck like a twig for shits and giggles. It made me laugh because it was of course the time she finds her voice. She is angry, more than usual, and just snaps. Every time she stands up to them she’s screaming in her head telling herself to shut up. It reminded me of me; talking without thinking. I think this is where I started liking Feyre. I realized how relatable she was. She couldn’t tell her family to back down or to leave her alone, but she refused to take crap from anyone else. I realized that a lot of people, myself included, tend to be like that with family. We feel like we can’t stand up to our family all the time but strangers that piss us off, beware. Once she found her voice she never stopped using it. Sometimes she should have shut up, but when you finally find your voice it’s hard to stay quiet. At the end I loved Feyre for all her strength, even her boneheaded decisions.
