“The Paper Magician” by Charlie Holmberg
The whole time I was reading I was imagining them doing some really fancy, magical origami (which I already find magical since I can’t do it). I liked the idea of magic being like a trade. You learn it and can pick a different medium to practice with i.e. paper. Once you pick one you are bound to it for life. This was different from any magic book I read because it wasn’t highly selective in who could be a magician. Ceony had choices outside of magic if that didn’t work out and she had choices within her learning.
The things that she can do with the magic is more than just folding. She can make things come alive and even fight with it. Paper is one of the least practiced mediums but for Ceony it turns out to be the perfect fit.
